The most valuable piece in creating this work was a micro cassette recorder. When I began early notes for the book I composed my ideas by hand; rough outlines of characters and where I believed I wanted them to go. As I worked on each story individually, I used the recorder to flesh out those characters, give them direction, dialogue and how I believed they would react to their respective situations. I even took the recorder with me when I traveled, along with several tapes and spoke at length, trying to create consistency and progress in their relationships. It’s interesting now that I have completed the work to go back and listen to how some of the ideas came to be on the page as they are now and how some of the ideas have evolved during the editing process.
